This work was supported in part by Euratom grant EUR no. 213-76-7 BIon A19 20 MODIFICATION OF THE RADIATION EFFECT ON NUCLEOBASES AND NUCLEOSIDES BY NITROIMIDAZOLE-DERIVATIVES AND ASCORBIC ACID A. Bahr, V. Penka and W. Lohmann Institut fUr Biophysik Justus-Liebig-Universitat Giessen Strahlenzentrum, Leihgesterner Weg 217 6300 Giessen, FRG. Derivatives of nitroimidazoles are used succesfully as radiation sensitizers in clinical application, animal experiments, and cell cultures. Their molecular mechanism of action is, however, still unknown.

C. Jordan+ and G. A. A. In a previous paper (1) a general treatment of the coupled diffusion process for hydrophobic ions through both the aqueous phase and themembrane was presented. The system phosphatidylserine/tetraphenylborate offered the most favourable conditions for estimating the rate constant k of desorption. From voltage-jump experiments the authors concluded that k was comparable to the rate of translocation. Here T-jump experiments are used in order to test the theory and to determine k by an independent method.

Measurements of the dielectric proper- ties of fully hydrated 1, 2-dipalmitoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine bilayers in the frequency range 1 - SO MHz show a dispersion which is attributed to the motion of the phosphocholine dipoles in the plane of the bilayers. When the temperature is varied, both the permittivity and loss factor increase sharply at the pretransition (3S o C) and the main transition (42 0 C). The relaxation time and amplitude were also determined for this dispersion ,and these further reflect the structural changes occurring with temperature.
