Ecologists study biodiversity because of what it reveals about how natural systems work, organize themselves, and change over time. The variety of life matters to researchers, in part, because measuring, studying, and making hypotheses about it helps them to understand living organisms and the ways they relate to their environments. S.

28 Interestingly, throughout this history the dominant trend has been a steady increase in biodiversity: graphs showing genetic, species, or ecosystem diversity over the history of life on Earth tend to climb steadily upward. 29 Why this is the case, why life on this planet seems to have evolved steadily toward greater diversity, is so far not conclusively explained. This does not mean, of course, that the evolution of life on Earth has always been about creation rather than destruction. The beginnings of life were followed very closely by losses of life, and nature as we now know it is the product of billions of years of deaths as well as births, requiring the disappearance of many species, genetic tendencies, and ecosystems along the way.

As ethicist Charles Curran puts it: “The shadow of God is present in all creation, and we can see something of God in all that is. ”25 Fueled by such belief, I respect and value the contributions of ecologists because I believe their work sheds light on the fundamental character of creation. Of course, this does not mean that scientists have sole and unfiltered access to absolute truth about the natural world. Science is the work of human beings, and human beings are fallible and limited. Scientists make mistakes, get things wrong, and have misunderstood basic facts about the world in the past; they almost certainly also misunderstand basic and important facts today.
