J have watched in myself the processes by which thought moves and I have discovered them to be mechlknical. as A HE RMIT IN THE HIMAL AYAS I have come t o the Himalayas to declare further war o n these invisible antagonists. Not that I cannot keep th em at bay when I set out determinedly to do so ; not that I am unaware of those theoretical and prac ti cal secrets whose application may give me a good victory ; not that I even lack powerful personal aid in thes e undertakings. But I have kept these invaders at bay only for a time, whilst my victories have never given me mo re than a temporary respite.

They are lordly and grand in their vivid green garments. Lichen coats their barks. The ground is thick with fallen brown fir-needles. The creep i ng plants which entwine themselves around a few of these trunks in front of my door show snow-white blossoIns of faintly scented little flowers which brighten the shadowed scene. They spangle the dark foliage like a firmament of shining stars. Among these silent tree-shadows I may find, doubtless, what the towns cannot give-peace, depth and healing. But the gradient is set at aD exceedingly steep angle and one can scarcely descend into it without clinging with both arxns to each trunk as ant: -passes.

The futility of a merely physical view of thi ngs becomes more apparent when this question oflife's j ustice or i nj ustice is reflected on. We ignore the mental side of life as being of lesser importance when all the time, in N atllre's eyes, it is the causati<,t side. Nature certainly seems "red in tooth and claw", as the materi alists say. But Kature is our mother. What mother punishes her children except educatively ? Nature is as real and as living as any human mother. For this planet has a di rec ti n g Intelli gence back of it, as the slightest glance at the mineral, plant a nd animal kingdoms will show.
