32 As soon as a worker discovers the hole, the worker goes to work. It also gives off special scent chemicals called pheromones (FER-eh-mohnz). This scent attracts other workers. Soon there are lots of termites patching up the hole. 33 DEFENDING THE FAMILY One day, ants arrive at the termites’ nest. Ants will attack and kill the termites. Then the ants will carry the bodies back to their nest to feed their own colony. The first termite workers the ants meet are killed. But they give off alarm pheromones.
