Dement'yev, who at the time was first deputy of Mikhail V. Khroonichev, the Minister of the Aircraft Industry: 'In the evening Khroonichev received a telephone call from Poskryobyshev, Stalin's secretary, who gave the message: "The Master (ie, Stalin) asks for the final report on the testing of the Tu-4 to be brought to him at his suburban country house" (that was the term used for Stalin's residence in Koontsevo, now within the boundaries of Moscow - translator's note). The Minister invited me to accompany him, since I had been in charge of the testing of the aircraft at LlI and knew all the details.
The bomber paid out 80-100 m (262-328 ft) of cable, the fighter closed in on the drogue and 'fired' the 'harpoon' into it; then the pilot shut down his engine and the fighter was towed by the Tu-4 like a glider. If enemy fighters attacked, the fighter pilot started his engine, broke contact with the bomber and engaged the enemy, subsequently hooking up to the bomber again for the journey home. (Incidentally, the Lockheed company tested a similar system in mid-1947 on a modified P-80A-1-LO (44-84995I'PN-995').
O. Komarov and engineer Major S. M. Kulikov. The Tu-4A climbed to 10,000 m (32,810 ft) and proceeded to the target in strict accordance with the schedule; its progress was monitored on a map display at the Main Command Centre. The Centre maintained HF and VHF radio communication with the bomber, using special code tables; for good measure the most important commands to the crew were backed up by the target range's support service. The weather was favourable, all systems functioned perfectly, and right on schedule the Tu-4A crew was authorised to make a practice pass over the target while transmitting special radio signals so that the final adjustments could be made to the test range instrumentation.
